A senior dog was stranded in the middle of a canal, clinging to a submerged shopping cart for dear life. But thanks to the quick action of rescuers, she now has a whole new lease on life ❤️
On June 16, a Good Samaritan spotted a heart-wrenching scene: a distressed dog trapped in the canal. Without hesitation, the Phoenix Fire Department, along with Hunter Stribling from the Arizona Humane Society (AHS), rushed to the scene. Together, they used a ladder and rescue devices to carefully bring her to safety.
The dog, a 10-year-old female now named Dorothea, was in a dire situation. AHS later shared in a press release that without their quick rescue, Dorothea “would have little to no chance of survival.” Despite her fear, she was “open to receiving help,” and once she was on dry land, it was clear she was grateful for her rescuers as she wagged her tail.
Though it’s unclear how Dorothea ended up in the canal, once she was rescued, she received medical attention from AHS. She was dehydrated, hungry, and covered in ticks but thankfully had only minor injuries. However, she needed dental work to remove fractured teeth. Despite her rough state, AHS staff described her as being in “great health given the circumstances.”
As she received care and affection, Dorothea’s personality began to shine through. Over the month she spent at the shelter, including a relaxing spa day with an AHS groomer, it became clear that Dorothea was a sweet, loving girl who loved cuddles and attention.
The best part of this story? Dorothea has now been adopted! She’s found a loving forever home in Youngtown, Arizona, where she’s spending her golden years in peace and comfort.
